DESCRIPTION
Artist Janet Echelman was hired by architect Moshe Safdie to develop this water-based art concept for the waterfront of the new Marina Bay Sands Resort. The project was designed with two main goals in mind: 1) to create an iconic work of public art that utilizes water as its primary material, and 2) to create a work in complimentary balance with its site: that is, to create a form sufficiently strong to hold its own in relation to the strong forms of Moshe Safdie’s architecture and surrounding landscape, and at the same time avoid becoming visual competition with those strong forms. The resulting design for the US$3 million budget, Water Crystal, is a three-dimensional faceted water sculpture project. Its faceted sides are created from sheets of dynamically moving water. During the day, Water Crystal will be clearly visible along the main view corridor from the resort to the waterfront, flanked between the two Crystal Pavilions. Its three-dimensional massing will be larger than either of the Crystal Pavilions, yet its fluid physical presence creates an ethereal result. The artist envisions a night presence that is entirely different, glowing and mysterious, saturated with color, enticing people to linger on the waterfront, and to sit on the steps to look out amidst the crystal forms and the evening water views.
